How to Talk to Your Kids About AI

Your kids might be using ChatGPT for homework. They might be seeing AI-generated content without realizing it. They might be anxious about what they're hearing. Here's how to have productive conversations.

Age-Appropriate Approaches

Ages 6-10

Keep it simple:

"Some pictures and videos online are made by computers, not cameras. They can show things that never really happened. If you see something confusing or scary, come tell me."

At this age, focus on the concept that not everything online is real, and creating a safe environment for questions.

Ages 11-14

More nuance:

"AI tools like ChatGPT are useful but they make mistakes and can be manipulated. They also don't actually understand you — they're just predicting what words come next. Let's talk about when to use them and when not to."

Discuss homework policies. Talk about critical thinking. Let them show you what they know.

Ages 15+

Have adult conversations:

"AI is going to be a big part of your life and career. Let's talk about using it effectively while understanding its limitations and risks. What have you noticed about how it works?"

They may know more than you in some areas. Learn together.
