Is This AI Anxiety?

You might be experiencing AI anxiety if you:

Feel dread when you see AI headlines
Can't stop thinking about how AI will affect your job
Feel stupid or left behind when others talk about AI
Avoid learning about AI because it's too stressful
Have trouble sleeping because of worries about the future
Feel hopeless about your career or skills
Feel paralysed — knowing you should do something but unable to start

If this resonates, please know: your feelings are valid. This is a normal response to genuinely unprecedented change. But you don't have to navigate it alone.

Coping Strategies

Immediate Techniques

5-4-3-2-1 Grounding

Name 5 things you can see, 4 you can hear, 3 you can touch, 2 you can smell, 1 you can taste. Brings you back to the present moment.

Box Breathing

Breathe in for 4 counts, hold for 4, out for 4, hold for 4. Repeat 4 times. Calms your nervous system.

Step Away

Close the laptop. Put down the phone. Go outside. Your brain needs breaks from threat-mode.

Daily Practices

News Boundaries

Set specific times to check AI news (not constantly). Unfollow accounts that increase anxiety. Balance doom content with practical, helpful content.

Small Actions

Anxiety feeds on helplessness. One small step forward — any step — helps. Learning one new thing feels better than worrying about everything.

Connection

Talk to people about how you're feeling. You'll find you're not alone. Shared experience reduces isolation.

Getting Professional Help

Therapy isn't for "crazy people." It's for humans dealing with hard things. AI anxiety is a hard thing.

NHS options: Talk to your GP about mental health support, or self-refer to NHS Talking Therapies at nhs.uk/talk-to-someone

Private options: Faster access but costs money (typically £50-150/session). Many therapists offer sliding scales. Online therapy can be more affordable.

What to say: "I'm experiencing anxiety related to AI and technology changes affecting my work and future. I'm looking for support managing this."

You don't need to have a diagnosis. "I'm struggling" is enough.

AI is changing things. That's real. Your feelings about it are valid. But you've handled change before. You've learned new things before. You've been uncertain before — and you got through it.

Take it one day at a time. Get help if you need it. You don't have to figure this out alone.
